New Volunteer Group Teams with Best Friends

APPLETON, WISCONSIN, August 6, 2004 –

FUSION, a new young adults group with a dedication to serving others, organized a special day of outdoor games for the children of Best Friends of Neenah-Menasha. The July 31 picnic and playtime at Clovis Grove Park in Menasha drew 35 attendees, each child with an accompanying adult.

Former "young friend" and member of FUSION's leadership team Sara Feustel spearheaded the event. She felt strongly about the impact it could have, as did Best Friends' Activities Coordinator Andrea Kust.

Both agreed the picnic would be great for the children, especially for the more than 50 waiting to be matched. "Giving the unmatched kids time with caring young adults will make a difference," remarked Feustel, "even if just for one day."

Attempting to pack a lot into that day, FUSION organizers kept pace with the children's excitement by offering a steady stream of activities. Games like the bean bag toss, balloon stomp and three-legged race appealed to the children, adults, and volunteers alike.

"It's just so nice to bring everybody together," said George of Neenah, attending with his son. "It's a lot of fun." The picnic also included always popular face-painting plus creative craft projects and goody bags to help the children take a little fun home.

Indeed home is where most headed after the final wheelbarrow race. Before leaving, however, a number of adults offered feedback. Mary of Menasha expressed both apprehension and excitement. "You never know what these first time events will be like, but FUSION put together a great one. I'm looking forward to the next!"

Similarly impressed, Irene of Neenah remarked, "This picnic was really, really great for the kids!" Then, thanking the FUSION volunteers, she added, "Your group is doing such good stuff. All the best to you and keep it up!"

Even more meaningful to the group were the children's responses. Twelve-year-old Katrina's comment was particularly poignant. When asked what she thought of the day, Katrina paused, looked back at the games, and wincing a little said, "What I think is, I think today is happiness."
